E-mail: [email protected] High-amplitude nonlinear surface acoustic waves (SAWs) generated by laser pulses were observed in polycrystalline material (stainless steel), and the nonlinear acoustic parameters were evaluated. The velocities of bulk waves and the elastic moduli of the second order were determined by detecting the surface perturbations produced by longitudinal and shear bulk waves (precursors). Consequently, a consistent set of elastic and acoustic constants was obtained by performing all necessary measurements with the same sample using laser excitation and detection techniques.

Focal transformation and the Gouy phase shift of converging one-cycle surface acoustic waves excited by femtosecond laser pulses.

We studied the changes of the pulse shape and the phase of the spectral components in converging-surface acoustic wave pulses. These pulses were excited with a femtosecond laser by a thermoelastic mechanism. To produce converging acoustic pulses, the laser beam was focused with an axicon in a circle on the surface of an aluminum sample. During propagation through the focus, the shape of the pul...

Real Time Imaging of Surface Acoustic Waves on Crystals and Microstructures

The use of acoustic pulses to image materials is well-known in echography or sonar applications. We are extending this field by generating point-excited sound pulses on solid surfaces with ultrashort laser pulses and imaging the resulting surface wave propagation in real time. To see the tiny vibrations of the surface, smaller in amplitude than the dimensions of a single atom, we use another se...

Influence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Underwater acoustic wave generation by filamentation of terawatt ultrashort laser pulses.

Acoustic signals generated by filamentation of ultrashort terawatt laser pulses in water are characterized experimentally. Measurements reveal a strong influence of input pulse duration on the shape and intensity of the acoustic wave. Numerical simulations of the laser pulse nonlinear propagation and the subsequent water hydrodynamics and acoustic wave generation show that the strong acoustic e...
